Stars and Stripes Frame PSP 7.04

This is what we will be making

Red. white, and blue frame with gold stars

NOTE: This tutorial is for intermediate to advanced PSP users and as such, it will not contain detailed instructions for each phase.

You will need the following items:

Paint Shop Pro, get it here: www.jasc.com
and my gold star. The star isn't zipped, because the file is only 13.6 kb. Just download it directly into any folder, only, don't forget where you put it, LOL.

Letīs begin!

1. Open up the image you want to frame. Go to Image>Add Borders. Add a border of 10px symmetric in either Red, White, or Blue. Note: Depending on what looks best with your image you may want to reverse the order of the colors you use. Also, make a note of the color number, so you can choose a darker shade of it for step #10.

2. Select the border with the Magic Wand, tolerance 0, feather 0. Invert the selection. Go to Effects>3D Effects>Chisel, size 2/transparent.

3. Invert your selection again. Go to Effects>Noise>Add. Add 30% Uniform noise.

Note: The reason we're adding noise is because we'll be saving the image as a JPG. When you have large areas of a solid color in a JPG image, they tend to get that "runny watercolor" look. If you add noise, this won't happen, and as a bonus, the frame has a slightly textured look. It's best to save solid color images, or images containing large blocks of solid colors in .gif format.

4. Go to>Effects>3D effects>Inner Bevel.

Soft Bevel

De-Select.

5. Go to Image>Add borders. Add a 10px symmetric border, using another one of your 3 colors. Select the border with the Magic Wand.

6. Go to Selections>Invert. Go to Effects>3D Effects>Chisel, size 2/transparent.

7. Invert your selection again. Go to Effects>Noise>Add. Add 30% Uniform noise. Go to Selections>Select none.

8. Go to>Effects>3D effects>Inner Bevel. Use the same settings as in step #4.

9. Repeat steps 5, 6, 7, and 8 using whichever of the 3 colors you haven't used as yet.

10. Add a 20px border, using a slightly darker shade of the color you used in step #1. (This is why you made a note of the color # in step 1). Select the border with the Magic Wand (same settings as before).

11. Go to Selections>invert. Go to Effects>3D Effects>Chisel, size 2/transparent.

12. Invert the selection. Add 40% Uniform noise this time.

13. Go to>Effects>3D Effects>Inner Bevel. This time, use these settings:

Flat Bevel

Select none.

14. The final border (frontier? Giggling smiley). Add a 5px symmetric border in the same color as the 20px border. Once more, select the border with the Magic Wand, invert the selection and add the same chisel effect. (Noise isn't necessary here because the border is so narrow.)

Select none

15. Open up your "goldstar-ns.psp" image. Copy and paste your star onto your framed image as a new layer. Move it to the upper left corner of the frame.

Use your Deform tool to to resize the star if needed, then turn the star so it lies diagonally, and one lower point is touching the inner corner of the frame.

Turning the star

Go to Effects/Sharpen/Sharpen.

Duplicate the layer and go to Image>Mirror

Sharpen again.

16. Once again, copy and paste your star onto your framed image as a new layer. Move it to the lower left and use your Deform tool to resize and turn the star so it lies diagonally, and one point is touching the inner corner of the frame.

Turning the bottom star

Sharpen the star.

Duplicate the layer and go to Image>Mirror.

Sharpen again.

Now, I can hear a few of you out there saying, "Well, that's silly, why didn't she just duplicate the stars at the top and go to Image>Flip?" I know some of you are saying that, because that's exactly what I would be saying, LOL. I did try it that way the first time I did this, but I'm not going to tell you what happened. In order to satisfy your curiosity, you'll just have to go ahead and try it that way, because if you're anything like me, you won't believe it until you see it for yourself. LOL.

Here's a hint though: Five pointed stars are not symmetrical images.

17. Paste another star onto your frame, and place it on the left side, halfway in between the top and bottom stars. Duplicate the layer and go to Image>Mirror.

Sharpen the star.

18. One final time, paste another star onto your frame, this time at the top, halfway in between the left and right upper corner stars. Duplicate the layer, then move it to the bottom section of the frame halfway in between the left and right lower corner stars.

See the finished frame at the top of the page for placement.

Sharpen the star.

Your frame is finished!
