Art Glass paperweight - continued

8. Go to Effects>Reflection Effects>Kaleidoscope:

Kaleidoscope

Feel free to play around with the settings. You can get some really cool effects!

Okay, we're coming up on the home stretch. The next step is the one that makes this look like a glass paperweight. It's achieved with the new PSP8 Balls and Bubbles effect and in order to explain how I used it, I'll need to show you several screen shots, so bear with me.

9. Go to Selections>Modfy>Expand, and expand the selection 2 pixels. Go to Effects>Artistic Effects>Balls and Bubbles.

9a. On the Shapes Tab, click the Radio button "Single ball or bubble" and check the "Maximum Possible Size" box.

Single ball

9b. On the Surface tab, click in the Material box and you will get the Materials flyout. Click the arrow and select the 100rr.bmp image.

Then use these settings:

9c. On the Maps tab use these settings:

Bump Map

NOTE: To get the correct texture for the Bump Map, click the arrow next to the bump map image and you will get a flyout. Select the Asphalt.bmp image.

Bump pattern

NOTE 2: If the Asphalt.bmp doesn't show up in the image flyout, click the button that says "Edit Paths...". You will get this window:

Edit Paths

Click on the Add button. A new line will show up in the window:

Add path

Click the Browse button, and browse to your Textures folder. Click O.K., then click O.K. again. You should be able to find your Asphalt.bmp in the image window now.

NOTE 3: Nina, my tester, reported that she couldn't get the Asphalt.bmp to come up in the Materials window, until she moved it to the PSP8 Bump Maps folder, even though she had enabled the path to the Textures folder. I didn't experience the same problem; however, if you do, make a copy of Asphalt.bmp and put it into both your Textures folder, and your Bump Maps folder. ('cause that way, you'll also have a new texture to use.)

9d. On the illumination tab, use these settings:

Illumination 1

(You can use your cursor to move the light on the blue ball around. You can place it where I have it set, or move it to a different area. Play around with it, that's how you learn.)

If you're finished checking your settings, click O.K.

10. Once more, go to Effects>Artistic Effects>Balls and Bubbles. Use the same settings on the other tabs as you did before, but on the Illumination tab change the settings to this:

illumination2

De-Select.

Your Art Glass paperweight is finished. Just add a background image or texture and save it as a .jpg.

There are lots of possible options for this paperweight. You could use a tube instead of a floodfill pattern, or one of the different reflection effects instead of Kaleidoscope.

Here's one I made using the Pastel Flowers pattern which came with PSP8. I adjusted the Kaleidoscope settings and the bubble layer opacity.

Here's the result Nina, my tester got. She used a picture of a Wizard. The colors are gorgeous.

Use your own imagination. Make the paperweight uniquely yours, and most of all, have fun!
