Moravian Star

Part 2

NOTE: You might want to make a duplicate of your image and save the original as a "Template". This way, if you want to make more stars with different colors and/or patterns you won´t have to redo all the basic steps.

7. Using your Magic Wand, click on the black area. Set your foreground style on pattern and then select a pattern you like and flood fill your selection. I chose the pattern that looks like knitting, with these settings:

Blue Knit Pattern

(I used the PSP Colors>Colorize filter to change the color.) Deselect.

8. Using your Magic Wand, click on the white triangles. Go to Selections>Modify>Expand, 2 pixels. Flood fill the area with a color you like, I used #40FFFF. Go to Effects>Reflection Effects>Kaleidoscope with the following settings.

PSP Kaleidoscope settings

9. Go to Effects>3DEffects>Inner Bevel and use these settings:

PSP Inner Bevel

Deselect.

10. Duplicate the layer, then rename it "bottom Star". Duplicate the "bottom Star" layer and name it Top Star.

Note: You should have 3 layers at this point.

PSP layer palette

If you don't have 3 layers, create a new raster layer, name it layer 1 and drag it to the bottom because you may need it later.

Turn off the Top Star layer. Turn off layer 1. Activate the bottom Star Layer. Now click on the area surrounding the star with your Magic Wand. Invert your selection, then go to Selections>Modify>Contract and contract it by 5 pixels. Flood fill it with the whatever color you used in step 8. Deselect.

SAVE YOUR IMAGE

11. Zoom in and check to make sure all your spaces are filled. If you find any areas which are transparent, fill them in with your paintbrush using one of the two colors in your image. Turn your Top Star Layer back on. Go to Layers>Merge Visible.

12. Resize your image to 90%, but BE SURE that "Resize all layers" is UNCHECKED! Move your star to the center of the canvas and duplicate the resized layer. Using the deformation tool, rotate the top star until the points are centered between the points of the bottom star.

13. Duplicate the rotated layer, then resize it by 75% (Resize all layers is STILL unchecked). Using the deformation tool rotate this layer and position it so that the star points are centered as closely as possible between the points of the two lower stars. Your image should now look something like this.

Triple multi-pointed stat

14. Repeat Step 13, except this time resize your layer by 60%. Layers, merge visible.

Nearing the home stretch....:O)

The Ring

15. Add a new layer. Grab your Selection tool, the Circle shape, feather "0", and draw a small circle on top of your ornament. Flood fill it with the White. Go to Selections>Modify>Contract, 5 pixels. Hit your delete key. Deselect.

16. Select all, hit the small ring with your Magic Wand, then repeat the Sculpture Effect you used in Step #5. Repeat the Sculpture Effect one more time. Deselect. This is what you should have:

Hanger ring

17. Layers, Merge Visible. Your Ornament is finished. You can resize it now, add a background and export it as a JPEG or export it as a transparent GIF.

Note: I didn´t make an ornament hanger for the star because I don´t hang the real one. However, if you would like to make a hanger for it, you can follow the instructions from my KnitCroSheen® ornament tutorial.

I had a wonderful time creating this tutorial. I hope you enjoy using it.
